Listen. As a Catholic, I am going to posit the following. This story in Genesis is either an extreme miracle, or it is perhaps meant as an illustrative of both God’s wrath, which He is slow to (so consider how long this was built up to reach that point in other words), and his forgiveness, which is immense, and hence the demonstration of peace at the end. I don’t truthfully know where the church stands on how much of this is factual, but I know Catholics, can’t speak for other denominations, believe in faith and science being compatible. I think most of us can recognize that there’s some serious science that can’t be ignored and that Noah likely didn’t travel in an ark full of predatory animals (and a bunch of their prey that they easily could have wiped out on the ark), and all of their babies after some with shorter gestation periods mated, and termites, for example. And again, if all of this somehow were true and God kept all of these animals subdued enough and managed to round them all up into the same place in the world in the first place across a magical and then disappearing bridge, well then, that would be a miracle. Since we don’t know one way or another (though we can reasonably extrapolate), can we just appreciate, for lack of better words, “the moral of the story”? It’s pretty simple. Don’t offend God, and if He’s angry enough with all of humanity to want to flood them out, then damn, humanity must have really screwed up!!
